A review of current collectors for lithium-ion batteries

Lithium-ion batteries are the state-of-the-art power source for most consumer electronic devices. Current collectors indispensable components bridging lithium-ion and external circuits, greatly influencing capacity, rate capability long-term stability of batteries. Conventional current collectors, Al Cu foils have been used since first commercial battery, over past two decades, thickness these has decreased in order to increase energy density. However improve performance further, alternative materials structures, as well specific treatments such etching carbon coating, also investigated enhance electrochemical electrical conductivity next-generation with higher capacities longer service lifetime. This work reviews six types including Al, Cu, Ni, Ti, stainless steel carbonaceous materials, compares from five aspects stability, conductivity, mechanical property, density sustainability. The effects three different structures foil, mesh foam chemical coating discussed. Future opportunities highlighted at end this review.
